Arcade stitch tutorial – This is a really pretty crochet stitch with an open design making it a great stitch to use on things like scarfs and shawls.
Arcade stitch tutorialย
It may seem like it will be a little complicated at first, simply because it follows a pattern of 4 rows which are repeated to make this lovely design… But in fact, it really is quite easy to follow along with this arcade stitch tutorial which includes photos
In this tutorial we’ll be using US terms, I have put the UK conversion in brackets to refer to
-
single crochet ( = UK double crochet )
-
double crochetย ( = UK treble crochet )
-
chain stitches.ย ( = UK chain stitch )
You can crochet this up in any yarn of your choosing, but here I have used ย acrylic, double knit, peach shade, and a 4.5mm hook.
Step 1.ย Start off by making a chain consisting of multiples of 6 stitches, plus 2 extra chain stitches.
Step 2.ย We’re now going to work our first row,ย this is our set up row. One single crochet in each of the first 2 chain stitches. Then chain 3 stitches. Skip the next 3 stitches… Then 1 single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches.
Step 3.ย ย Continue the sequence of making 3 chain stitches… missing 3 stitches… then making 1 single crochet stitch in each of the next 3 stitches… You’ll finish this row with 1 single crochet in each of the last 2 stitches.
That completes your set up row… We won’t be repeating this row again.
Step 4.ย This is row 1 of our repeated 4 rows that will make the Arcade Stitch pattern.
Start by making 1 chain stitch (this is our turning chain) … Then make 7 double crochet stitches into the chain space that was created in our set up row.
Step 5.ย Skip the next stitch, then make 1 single crochet in the next stitch (This will be in the middle stitch of the 3 single crochet from the previous row)
Step 6. ย Continue this sequence of 7 double crochet stitches in the chain space… Skip 1 stitch… Then 1 single crochet in the next stitch. Finish this row by doing 1 single crochet stitch in the last stitch.
Step 7. ย ย Chain 4… This is row 2ย of our repeated 4 rows that will make the Arcade Stitch pattern. ย This will be ourย turning chain and also it will make ourย chain space for ourย next row.
Step 8. ย Skip the first 3 stitches… Then make 1 single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches… Then make 3 chain stitches… Skip the next 5 stitches… Then make 1 single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches.
Step 9. ย Repeat thisย sequence, making 3 chain stitches… Skipping 5 stitches… Then 1 single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches, until you have 2 stitches at the end of the row… Make 1 chain stitch.. Skip 1 stitch… Then make 1 double crochet in the last stitch.
Step 10. ย ย This is row 3ย of our repeated 4 rows that will make the Arcade Stitch pattern.ย ย Make 3 chain stitches… Then make 3 double crochet stitches into the first chain space from the previous row… Skip the next stitch… Then work 1 single crochet in the next stitchย (This will be in the middle stitch of the 3 single crochets from the previous row) .ย Then work 7 double crochet stitches into the next chain spaceโฆ Skip the next stitch and work 1 single crochet into the next stitch
Step11. ย ย Continue this sequence of working 7 double crochet into the chain space… Skip a stitch… Then 1 single crochet into the next stitch. We’ll finish this row by making 4 double crochet stitches into the last chain space.
Step 12. This is row 4ย of our repeated 4 rows that will make the Arcade Stitch pattern.ย Chain 1 (this is our turning chain) โฆ Work 1 single crochet into each of the next 2 stitchesโฆ Chain 3 stitchesโฆ Skip the next 5 stitchesโฆ Then work 1 single crochet stitch into each of the next 3 stitches. Repeat thisย sequence, making 3 chain stitchesโฆ Skipping 5 stitchesโฆ Then 1 single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches.
Step 13. ย ย Finish the row after the last chain 3, skipping the next 5 stitches, then making 1 single crochet in the next stitch.
Step 14.ย ย Now Go back to Step 4 and repeat all the sequences from there to form this gorgeous Arcade Stitch Pattern.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this Arcade Stitch tutorial ๐
Please let me know what you make in this gorgeous stitch in the comments below
I hope you have lots of fun with your crafts.
I made this beautiful crochet shawl using the Arcade stitch. You can check out how I made it by clicking HERE
How to you increase this stitch to make something like a shawl?
Hi Madeleine, in step one it explains… Step 1. Start off by making a chain consisting of multiples of 6 stitches, plus 2 extra chain stitches.
So you can make it any length you want, as long as you do it in multiples of 6 stitches… Then when you have the desired length you just add 2 to the total.
I made some shawls with it, the link for them is under the pattern article. I hope that helps.
Is there a border for this
Hi Linda,
I don’t know of a border that’s specific to this stitch, but I would be inclined to do quite a plain border as the pattern of the stitch is so busy
Thanks a lot Tilly. I even went through zome of the you tube videos and none of them explains how to repeat the pattern. You have explained that very well.
Cheers,
Pawani

The end of step 9 isnโt clear
Starting with โ2 stitches at the end of the rowโ
I do not wind up with 2 stitches
Please clarify
Thanks
Hello Carol,
after your last set of 3 stitches in the top of ‘the arch’ of the previous row… you chain 1, skip a stitch and then make 1 double crochet in the last stitch.
I hope that makes sense for you
Let me know if you need any further help.

Can you make this pattern wider going with the instructions.
Hello Dorothy,
yes you can make it as wide as you like, you just need to do your starting chain with multiples of 6 + two extra. So 6+2 .. or 12+2 … or 18+2 …24+2 Continue your chain in multiples of 6 until you have the desired width and then add 2
I hope that helps ๐
