Those of us that enjoy yarn crafts are usually pretty proud of our yarn stash… I know I am.
.
But if you’re anything like me then you’ve probably got an odd single ball of yarn that you had left over at the end of a project or 10… Or perhaps that gorgeous yarn that you spotted in the store and even though you didn’t have a project in mind for it, you couldn’t resist the temptation, so bought just one ball because it was so pretty… and it was probably calling out to you.
Quite a few times I’ve bought yarn, only to discover that it is not a yarn that can be used for crochet as it’s too difficult to work with… They are perfect yarns for these shawls as they will often give a bit more detail. 🙂
Well now I have the perfect project for those lonely ole balls…
‘The One Ball Crochet Shawl’
.
As the name suggests, you can make a shawl out of one ball of yarn. 🙂
Some of the yarns I’ve used to make these shawls are…
- Bernat Pipsqueak
- Fair Isle Harbor
- Red Heart Collage
- Prism yarn
- Premier City Life Ladder Yarn
- Red Heart Gumdrop Yarn
- Bernat Pipsqueak

- Red Heart Collage
- Prism
- Premier City Life Ladder Yarn
- Red Heart Gumdrop Yarn
- Bernat Mix Home Yarn
- Caron Cakes
.
I’ve made loads of these One Ball Crochet Shawls, because they are perfect so many reasons…
.
- They can be made using one ball of yarn … Hence the name, “The One Ball Crochet Shawl” 😀
- They are beginner friendly.
- Quick and easy to make.
- great for making for charity (I’ve made lots of these for the residents of care homes… and they love them).
- relaxing to make and you can sit and watch tv as you make them as no complicated pattern to follow.
- A great way to use up the oddments in your yarn stash.
- They are also great to use as scarves (see my video, below, to see them used as scarves
- You can use any type of yarn (again, see my video for some of the different yarns I’ve used)
What We Need To Make These Fab Shawls…
- A ball of yarn
- Crochet hook …. I like to go up a couple of sizes to the recommended size hook as it makes for a more lacy looking shawl
- A stitch marker
- scissors
- darning needle to sew in the ends
Abbreviations used…
- CH = Chain
- SC = Single Crochet
.
Let’s get started…
.
Start by making a slip knot and chaining 8… (place a stitch marker into the ring to save confusion later) Then slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring and then chain 8
.
ROW 1 – SC into the ring, then CH 4… SC into the same ring, then CH 8 (we will always finish a row with a CH 8 as this is how we increase the size of the shawl by one ring on each row) … You will now have 2 completed rings.
ROW 2 – Turn your work and SC into the first ring of the previous row, then CH 4 … Then SC into the next ring and CH4 … SC again into the same ring and then CH 8 … You will . now have 3 completed rings.
ROW 3 – Turn your work and SC into the first ring of the previous row, then CH 4 … Then SC into the next ring and CH4… SC again into the same ring and then CH 8 … You will . now have 4 completed rings.
ROW 4 – Turn your work and SC into the first ring of the previous row, then CH 4 … Then SC into the next ring and CH4… Then SC into the next ring and CH4… Then SC into the next ring and CH4… SC again into the same ring and then CH 8 … You will . now have 5 completed rings.
Now you have the basic simple pattern of how we make up this ‘One Ball Crochet Shawl’ … You just continue the above steps until you finish your ball of yarn.
You could also put tassels on it if you wanted… Either in a contrasting color, or the same color…. Just remember to save enough yarn for your tassels if you are using the same ball for your shawl and tassels.
Of course you don’t have to use just one ball of yarn if you want your shawl to be bigger 🙂
Although I’ve tried to make it as clear as possible with the written instructions above, I also made a Youtube tutorial because I know a lot of people like to actually watch how something is done… It will also give you some idea how certain types of yarn work with this ‘One Ball Crochet Shawl’.
